SEWING TUTORIAL: Earphone Cable Winder

Earphone Cable Winder
If you just look the things, you might not know what this is right away. I posted it at my facebook wall for few days to see whether my friend and families could guess it.   And  I was right, without any clue, they couldn’t  guess what the function of this thing.
Anyway, this is an earphone cable winder. I can say that this is original, since most of the time, before making any sewing project, I start with browsing internet to find ideas, pictures or even patterns. But for this, I just couldn’t find anything to start with.  Sure there are some images of cable winder, most of them are in shape of fish bone, or animal made from plastic or rubber. But when I tried to find something that I can sew, I didn’t find it.
So why not invent one? Sure an animal shape would be cute, but it must be quite hard to sew a small thing neatly with sewing machine. So I made more simple shape.
These was what  I needed to make my project:
- Some  scraps of cotton fabric
- Fusible interfacing (optional)
- Polyester fiber fill (or cotton) for stuffing
- A button
- paper and pen
- color matching thread

 How to make:

1.  Cut fabric :
- One rectangular scrap,  size 9 cm x 16 cm, fold it half, right side out. This is for the pocket.
- Two rectangular scraps, size 9 cm x 12 cm (mine are dotted and  flower) these are for the body of winder
- one rectangular 20 cm x 3.5cm, fold it half. This is to make strap with the button hole

Cut pattern:
- make the pattern (you can follow my simple shape or make your own) on a piece of paper and cut it
Note: if your fabric is a medium / light  weight cotton, I suggest to fuse the interfacing on wrong side of each fabric scraps for the body to make them more firm.

2.
Place your scraps for body right side together, an insert a half folded scrap fabric for pocket between two scraps to make sandwich like picture bellow, and pin them.

  3.
Copy pattern on to the sandwich. Sew on the line but leave some part unsew  for turn right side out later

4.
This is what you get it after sew and trim the excess. Don’t forget to leave 0,5 cm  for seam allowance

5.
Turn rightside out, and stuff it with fiber fill. Before stuffing, I sew a narrow and smal zigzag stich around the edge, but its quite difficult to sew it neatly, (you see, mine is quite messy), maybe it will be easier if you sew straight stich,  or just skip this step if you want to.

6.
Now you can insert the strap and sew it close. Sorry, I forget to take picture of how to make the strap. Well,  It just a strap, and make it a button hole at edge. Then, sew a button on this small pillow, where the button hole would be landing.

That’s all. You’re done !
And this is how it is used

And this one was a present for my niece, Aqila...
